Top 10 Tips to Stay Positive After Redundancy

The news of redundancy can be a difficult time for anyone. It can cause a range of emotions, from anger and sadness, to guilt and even relief. While it’s important to process your emotions and take a break, it’s also important to stay positive and look for new opportunities.

Here are our top ten tips to staying positive after being made redundant.

  1. Accept your emotions: It’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed with a range of emotions after being made redundant. It’s important to allow yourself to process your feelings and not rush into anything.
  2. Take a break: It’s also important to take some time out and reflect on the situation. This will help you to gain perspective and make sure you’re ready to move on.
  3. Make a plan: Make a plan of action. Think about what you can do to get back into work. Make sure you have a clear goal in mind and consider what additional skills or qualifications you may need to do this.  
  4. Reach out: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Reach out to family, friends and career advisors for support.  There may be resources locally to you to whom you can reach out to for addional vocational support.
  5. Network: Use your network to find out about new opportunities, update your LinkedIn profile, and don't be afraid to ask for recommendations from people already in your network. You never know who might be able to help or who may know of a job that’s not yet advertised.
  6. Boost your skills: Take the opportunity to brush up your skills or learn new ones, YouTube is a great free resource to learn new things. Better still, you could also take a course or attend a workshop to learn a new skill, increase your network and your chances of getting a job at the same time.
  7. Take care of yourself: Make sure you’re looking after yourself physically and mentally. Eat healthy foods, stay well hydrated, rest well, and get plenty of excercise.  This leads into our next tip;      .
  8. Get out and about: Try to stay active and get out of the house. Make sure you’re mixing with other people, as this can help to boost your mood.
  9. Be positive: Remind yourself of all the positives in your life and the opportunities that may come your way.
  10. Stay focused: Don’t let the news of being made redundant consume you. Stay focused on the future and the job search.
